The majority of Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) services are free to non-English speaking clients. Generally, the organisation you are contacting will accept TIS National charges and provide you with an interpreter to access their services.

If you are a non-English speaker and need to access an interpreter, call 131 450 and tell the TIS National operator the language you need. Once the operator finds an available interpreter, tell the operator which organisation you need to call.

Some organisations you wish to speak to may not be willing to accept the charges for our interpreting services. Where the organisation you need to speak to does not accept our calls, you can choose to pay for the service yourself by creating a personal account with TIS National. You will need a credit card to create a personal account.

Please view our service charges before creating an account with TIS National.

How to create a personal account

  1. Call TIS National on 131 450.
  2. Say the language you need.
  3. Tell the interpreter you need to create a personal account with TIS National.
  4. Provide the TIS National operator with your:
  • full name
  • Australian postal address
  • phone number
  • credit card details.

Your client code

When your account is created you will be given a TIS National client code.

Your client code is similar to an account number and is required every time you wish to pay for a TIS National service. It is important to keep your client code in a safe place to avoid unregistered users charging services to your account.

Job numbers

When you request a TIS National service you will be given a job number as a reference of each interpreting service.

Job numbers are automatically generated in our system when a new interpreting job is created and it is provided to you and to the interpreter. Write this number down as a record of the service in case you need to make any follow up enquiries about the service.
