How the Free Interpreting Service (FIS) supports registered trade unions
Registered trade unions represent the interests of their members and help them to access information and support. The FIS gives registered trade unions free access to professional certified interpreters, removing language barriers and supporting clear, effective communication. It supports equal access to registered trade unions for members with limited English proficiency. This is particularly important when communicating legal terms or complex information.
Eligibility and registration
Registered trade unions can use the FIS to communicate with anyone in Australia who is eligible for Medicare (Australian citizens, permanent residents and select temporary visa holders).
Trade unions registered under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 are listed on the Fair Work Commission website.
Eligible activities
The FIS can be used to provide employment-related support and advice to registered trade union members who are eligible for Medicare.
Ineligible activities
The FIS cannot be used by registered trade unions for:
- contract negotiation or collective bargaining
- union recruitment activities and membership drives
- attending legal proceedings, where the responsibility for providing interpreting services lies with the Fair Work Ombudsman or the relevant court or tribunal.
Registration
Each registered trade union will need a unique client code. Any employee of the registered trade union can use the FIS to communicate with an existing or potential member.
