Parliamentarians and their staff can use the Free Interpreting Service to communicate with constituents.

Free Interpreting Service

How the Free Interpreting Service (FIS) supports parliamentarians

As elected representatives, parliamentarians have a duty to communicate with their constituents, and advocate on their behalf. The FIS gives parliamentarians free access to professional certified interpreters, removing language barriers and supporting clear effective communication. It supports equal access and civic participation for constituents with limited English proficiency.

Eligibility and registration

All Australian parliamentarians and their staff are eligible to access the FIS if the parliamentarian is:

  • a current serving member of any federal, state, or territory parliament. This includes members of parliament, senators, members of legislative assemblies and legislative councils, and
  • using the service to communicate with anyone in Australia who is eligible for Medicare (Australian citizens, permanent residents and select temporary visa holders).

Eligible activities

The FIS can be used for constituency purposes such as:

  • community consultations and forums
  • advocating on behalf of a constituent.

Ineligible activities

The FIS cannot be used for:

  • campaigning, party membership drives, fundraising or other party related activities
  • communicating with people who are not eligible for Medicare, such as tourists, temporary work visa holders and international students.

Registration

Each parliamentarian will need a unique client code. All staff within the parliamentarian’s office can use the same client code.
